Iris, Did You Notice?
05:39
|
|||
Iris, did you notice
Ears sit slightly higher than our noses
Holding up sunglasses over our eyes?
We're so cool, you and I
It was eternity
Then something like eight minutes before you saw me
Sunlight set across the solar system,
Refracting in our eyes
When those scathing notices of failure
Pile up on your foyer table
Dragging on the threads of space and time
Throw all your change in a wishing well
I wish you well
Iris, just run
‘Cause, Iris, when the loan sharks bite,
Man, they really gnaw and tear,
Tear like wolverines
Oh Iris, it's bloody
But listen to these six strings
And I hope you reminisce on those starlings
Murmuring in neat clouds of harmony
Little black birds billowing over Ohio highways
When the voices join us
Realize my best attempts at counterpoint
Iris, remember dancing lakeside en point
Pirouetting in the sand
Arabesque, the strings sweep,
A la cicada song in evening
Oh Iris, I know it's cliché,
But I hope it moves you anyway
Throw all your change in a wishing well
I wish you well
Oh Iris, just run, run
Run to the city with the old name,
Run to the city with your new name
Start the world over
Oh Iris, just run, run
Annihilate all that came before me
Embrace the vast potential of the after
And Iris, just run
Save for the hum of a distant interstate
Frogs reign for miles of empty space
Floating in the midst of the lake in laughter,
Joyous laughter
As the bells chime in
Firing on and off like fireflies
Rising blinking lakeside
Oh Iris, it was so far from Autumn
When a single red leaf
Fell from green canopy
Oh the fern grows on the decaying tree
And Iris, did you notice it was beautiful anyway?
Did you notice it was beautiful anyway?
Just run
You always just run
You always run

Sealed
03:06

All my books and all their poems
Cast like leaves and seeds in grass
In monkey grass her photographs
Cower in her aftermath
Pick her up, let her go
Let her leave on her own
All those secrets hide in journals, hide in
Dogwoods, dogwoods blossom out the spine
I can see just fine
All my shit strewn about the yard
Since you stormed out my house it leans
I secured the armoire
But my things slide for the lawn,
Through the hole where you ripped out a wall
I since sealed the sides in vinyl
What got out won't get in
What got in won't get out now
In ivy, English Ivy, keys of a
Wreck piano chromatically climb
Reaching kitchen calendar in leak
Raindrops, swelling pages, swelling time
It's twice a year from here to July
And I have spent every dragging night of it
Since you fell through my house it blooms
Bugs erupt from the floorboards
Up walls they crawl for the sun,
Through the hole where you ripped out a sky
I since sealed it all in jasmine
What got out won't get in
What got in won't get out now

Wanderlust
04:44
|
|||
Oh I sat through every season
Browsing the same plasma screen
My knees ached in atrophy
Withered legs,
Balding skull
Crooked spine,
And crooked bones
Petty thieves
Are all I found
Quick-mouth tyrants
With crooked crowns
Oh I crossed over mountains
Fell through the center of the world
I arose through fields of lava
Cooled in plains
Where no tree grows
Just verdant moss
On crooked rocks
The midnight sun
Never rose
Melting glaciers
On crooked roads
Oh I sought foreign lovers
Foreign girls with foreign tongues
They were all just method actors
Every girl,
Looks just the same
When you're mere inches
From her face
Keep on searching
All you'll find
Are crooked halos
On crooked brides
Oh I'm self-centered and anointed
Oh but I sure am self-verified
Oh if you were hoping for someone selfless
A privileged girl
A privileged boy
Let me know
What you find
For all my faults
And crooked lines
I just hope
I didn’t waste your time

The Port (Kaleidoscope)
04:42
|
|||
Way out at sea
Stars out-gleam your ceiling
Stickers with your bedlight off
Stars lose their sheen
When we go to port, eight grain
Silos flashing signals disrupt dark
Every time we go to port
You empty like semi-truck
And I stale like spilt grain
Dump the freight, ship it out
They're tipping tractor trailers
Like children's toys:
Na Na, trailer-side down
Dump the freight, ship it out
Thanks for the lift, dear
Up here in this elevator
I see your taillights go
Basking in your brilliance,
I wallow in your afterglow
With just your lips
You sent a reel of perfect
Colors, perfect patterns, spiraling 'round
But colors fade,
Engulfed in the grain, quicksand
Sinking, slowly sinking, slowly down
Another migrant worker drowned
Walking down the corn grain
Caught forty feet up a silo-grain tower
"Come on up," the man said,
"I got this goddamn psoriasis,
I'm drunk and I'm violent,
And I can't afford a cigarette.
So come on up, come on up."
When you take my hand
Cusping my fingers
I know I got it bad
"Now come on up, come on up"
It's rushing back
Warmth through my heart-core
I know you won't be back
Still basking in your brilliance,
I wallow in your afterglow
Colors all colliding
Turning like kaleidoscopes
If they'd sing, they'd be like,
"Na Na, Na Na, Na Na”

Control Burn

Your street sprout a sapling
Rooted in the sewer
It won't sprout higher
Than the lowest car tires
Controlled by the fire
(We grow when we burn)

Weeds
03:41
|
|||
Satellite, is it bright out there?
Overgrown, in the tendrils of shade
All your hair’s entangled
In your kudzu crown
It’s all vining and blooming
Untamable
And when we hit calm it was soaking in miles of moonlight
Settled in orchards and vineyards in acres of rows
And over all the fields
Hung satellites
Each inviting us to bathe
And settle in the soil
Over each, another moon
That we couldn’t choose
And when we hit love I just coddled and loved it away
Settled and tied to a bed twin-sized alone
Blindfolded
By ambitious vine
I heard awful laughter
Felt their flashlights rise
Seeking and destroying
Untamable
It’s a massacre of every hue
A million moons remain to settle
Over all the farms, and over all their fields
A noxious weed remains to settle

Wear Me Out
02:16
|
|||
Wear me out,
Wear me down
A life full of Sundays
Walking through the pines
Till I'm worn, wear me out
Guide me past salt Atlantic dead things
Lead me romping through the mud
Forget our footprints fade in the wind-ripped sand shoreway
Here we are, wear me out
Wear me out
Wear me down
The rest of my Sundays
Resting by your side
If you're the one who wears me out
